Penguin Engineering are a small business based on Hayling Island. We provide high quality marine products to both trade and public in the UK, imported from our European manufacturers and sold through our e-commerce site, showroom and direct. Trading since 1982, we have a loyal customer base and established reputation for old-fashioned personal service.
We are seeking a dynamic and highly organised colleague to join our team for 4 days a week, from Monday to Thursday. You will be the backbone of our office operations, responsible for managing various sales, administrative and despatch tasks while ensuring the smooth functioning of our office environment.
The general responsibilities will inevitably change from day to day according to the needs of our small business. We very much expect you to be part of the team with input into all aspects of what we do currently and in the future.
There is scope for the right candidate to develop the role with a view to taking on more responsibility and helping to grow our business.
Responsibilities:
As a small company, we don’t have “departments” and the whole team is involved in all aspects of our business. As such, the responsibilities listed below will be shared by colleagues as necessary from day to day.
Office Management:
- Handle phone calls, emails, face to face sales and correspondence efficiently.
- Maintain a well-organised and efficient office environment.
- Maintain and update company records, databases, and filing systems.
Sales Support
- Processing customer sales, refunds and returns.
- Responding to customer queries.
- Manage trade accounts.
- Answer phone calls from customers and deal with problems as they arise.
- Sales support at Southampton Boat Show and any other exhibitions.
Warehouse / Despatch
- Receiving and processing incoming stock and materials.
- Picking and filling orders from stock.
- Packing and shipping orders.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience in office management, sales or administrative roles. Given the broad range of responsibilities, a background within a smaller business would be beneficial.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and confident learning new IT software.
- Written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organisational skills with an eye for detail.
- Ability to multitask and prioritise tasks effectively.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure.
- High level of professionalism and discretion.
- Ability to undertake manual handling duties, including light lifting.
- Basic knowledge of marine industry and sailing is a plus.
- Knowledge of Sage is a plus.
- Positivity, willingness to share ideas and a readiness to adapt.
- Training will be given for any skills and knowledge if required.

Job Type: Part-time, Permanent
Salary: Starting £20-26k per annum (negotiable) before standard minimum employer and staff contributions. As a 4 day per week role, this is equivalent to £25k to £32k for a 5-day working week.
Hours of work:
Basic hours of work will be 08:30 to 17:00 Mondays to Thursdays with reasonable flexibility expected according to the needs of the business, especially during the Southampton Boat Show period in September.
Holiday allowance will be 16 days per annum (equivalent to 20 pro rata), plus national holidays. We also take a flexible approach to the Christmas period.
