Carbon Steering Wheels

Carbonautica is best known for its carbon sailing yacht steering wheels which save weight, improve steering “feel” and of course are beautiful to behold.

Carbon fibres exhibit generally superior performance in tensile, compressive and flexual properties, as well as fatigue and temperature resistance. They don't just look great, but they also come with some real performance advantages. The weight advantages of a carbon wheel weighing in the range region of 5 kilos will be apparent to anyone who's tried to carry a stainless steel equivalent. This massive reduction in weight results in a much lower rotational inertia and a much more responsive helm. Consequently, the power drain on the autopilot system becomes considerably lower. This is even more noticeable on a twin wheel yacht.

Carbonautica wheels come in a choice of three bespoke patterns. The sport with Y-shaped spokes that tend to be popular with race yachts, five-spoke, which looks great on more traditional sailboats, and a really elegant three-spoke pattern. Diameters generally range from 600 and 1700 mm. In terms of finish, clear lacquer is the obvious choice for carbon, but can be painted if you prefer, as black may not be the best option in hot climates. There's a choice of eight standard gloss paint finishes for both carbon and GFC wheels.

Once you've decided on your spoke design and finish, we can help you work out the correct hub to fit your wheel pedestal. Carbonautica has standard 25 mm hub profiles for Edson, Lewmar, Jefa and Goiot. Custom profiles also possible for Edson, Jefa, JP3, Solimar and others. Please get in touch and between us and Carbonautica, we'll make sure you have a perfect fit.
